Over 30 years ago, in the 80’s I spent most of my spare time and money down Greensleves Records, W12 and the Mighty Dub Vendor, SW11. Checkin all the crisp biscuits for jam downs with me bredrin outta Young Lion HI Power, sound. Time come, I managed to lay my hands on a couple of turntables with pitch controls and my mixing journey began with a mix of electro street sounds and bio rhythms, evolving into the hardcore, house and garage.
First props behind the decks came in the early 90’s spinning on 1200’s at free parties in and around West London area and a couple of local pirate stations, under the guise of DJ Headlock.
Got a break into the London club scene, when a promoter of weekly 1000 capacity all-nighter called Motivation heard me playing House & Garage at a party and put me on his list. We swapped numbers “landline numbers”, no mobiles back then unless you wanted to carry a brick with a battery the size of a suit case about with you.
Anyway I got a call and asked do the warm up slot. That went ok, so I got offered a residency at Motivation at the boulevard W7. However when the flyers came out I discovered my DJ name had been typoed to “Dave Locke”. I can’t exactly now remember why this happened 😀 Anyway I was getting a residency in a 1000 capacity West London club spinning every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, spinning upfront House and garage alongside many of the top name circuit DJ’s of the 1990’s. I was also offered a residency with Graham gold from KISS FM and Peach, at a night called “Rejoice”. From here I gained a number of residencies as well as guests, in various upfront clubs in west and east London, Essex, Surry, Hampshire, and Dorset throughout the 90’s.
Late 90’s I started to venture down to Devon, “being my stomping ground as a kid”, to spin some banging house at various free parties in both Devon and Cornwall as well as some familiar venues to name a few, Burston Manor, Monastery, Kingsley, Cavern, and more. Today I go under the guise Dave Headlock and I am still spinning tunes to be played loud and be shared amongst the people that love it as I do.
